01

Collect the transition details

Ask your employer when medical and dental coverage end, whether continuation coverage is available, and when notices will arrive. Keep the benefit summary, insurer contact information and any continuation notice. Do not assume your new job provides coverage immediately.

02

Compare more than one path

Possible options can include another household member’s employer plan, individual coverage, COBRA continuation or a public program if eligible. Compare total premiums, providers, prescriptions, cost sharing and the effective date. Availability depends on your situation; no single option fits every job transition.

03

Treat deadlines separately

Loss of qualifying coverage may create a Special Enrollment Period, with documentation and timing rules. Georgia residents should check Georgia Access for current requirements. COBRA election deadlines and Marketplace enrollment deadlines are separate; deciding to stop COBRA early generally does not create a new enrollment opportunity by itself.

04

Confirm before canceling

Ask when the replacement becomes effective and what payment or documentation is needed. Keep written confirmation and avoid a gap caused by assuming an application alone starts coverage. If timing is uncertain, contact the insurer or marketplace before ending your existing plan.
